So over the past few weeks I have been realising what it is that I want to aim for in my actual real life. Over summer I realised that I love festivals more than most, I always thought it was natural to get as emotional and overwhelmed by over an incredible event as I did but the more I spoke to other people I found that my passion was different.
There was one specific turning point at Boomtown festival where I realised that working in the festival circuit is what I’m meant to do. I pondered over this small epiphany for many months, thinking back to my years of festival work and what I’d been best at and came to the conclusion that being hands on in production is certainly my area of expertise and talent, alongside this, I love this kind of work. So I decided that a goal of mine is to become a successful freelance stage manager so I can travel all over the world. In the effort to make small steps towards eventually achieving this goal I applied to work at Sound City as a volunteer and have proven successful as I’ve been offered a job production running at the festival itself, a position on the conference team and potential work at the Human League concert as well. Alongside this I may have a job stage managing at a small fringe stage at The Great Escape and I’m assistant stage managing at Deershed Festival. All in all I feel these small steps getting into this circuit could really help me in the long run and I want to continue getting as involved as I possibly can.
Back to more current events though, we have now started marketin
g our IPP event with a poster, Facebook event page and we’ve put a selected amount of tickets online for sale as well. In terms of promotion we are using traditional methods of putting up posters around LIPA as the students here are our main audience, and we’re promoting through social media platforms. In the interests of using up all of resources we are also pushing promotion through our Rebel Rebel networks as well just for that extra little bit of exposure. In terms of naming our event we’ve gone simple in order to effectively get across the festival themed slant of this night without pushing it too much. Our choice of title being as simple as ‘JIL Presents: Festival Ready’ is easy and self explanatory whilst still keeping some element of curiosity for people reading the poster.
In terms of ticketing to try and generate any pre-sales we’re offering a basic deal of £2 ADV and £3 OTD. As I said this is a super basic technique but even if only 5 people buy a ticket in advance that’s 5 people we definitely know/hope will turn up, as well as this having tickets online make the event seem more appealing in terms of professionalism as it appears well organised and suggests that there is need to buy tickets in advance. This is all in hope of creating more of an incentive for our audience to buy in advance, though we do understand that the demographic we are appealing to are highly unlikely to buy tickets for an event like this and with such low
prices in advance.
